Dr. Shelley Rabinovitch
Dr. Shelley Rabinovitch
(York University Alumni Matters)
is our Special Guest of Honour this year.
Dr. Shelley Rabinovitch (Ph.D) is a cultural anthropologist who teaches
religious studies and women's studies at the university level. She
received her Ph.D in 2001 (cue "2001: A Space Odyssey" theme music) from
the Univ. of Ottawa, her main teaching location (where she is 2006 Part
Time Professor of the Year), but she has also taught as an adjunct at both
Carleton U. and Queen's University. Rumour has it that by the 08/09
school year, she will be teaching an upper level course on religion and
science-fiction which will be a for-credit university class!
Shelley is a long time SF/F fan and SCA member, and founding (co)
vice-president of the Ottawa Science Fiction Society. Her song "Walk
Among the Stars" was recorded by filksinger John Hall and is featured on a
FilkOntario CD. She continues to write both filksongs and SCA ballads,
holds a few mundane awards for her poetry, and has two books on
Neo-Paganism (co-author/editor) to her name as well as numerous articles
(academic and popular press). She counts as friends and musical
co-conspirators such SF and SCA luminaries as Joe Bethancourt of Arizona
("That Great Big Way Out There") and Toronto's own Heather Dale. She
claims to be single, although her cats might argue that fact.
